We have developed novel and unique strategies on multiple fronts to address some of the most important challenges associated with functional sp2 polymer materials, at both molecular and nanoscopic scales. Specifically, structural engineering approaches have been employed to achieve on-demand torsional conformational control, robust intermolecular interactions, defect-free construction of ladder type backbones, balanced solubility and electronic performances, and cost-efficient synthesis of nanoporous sp2 materials, etc. By integrating synthetic toolbox and iterative structure-performance correlation, the desired structural features for practical function of these sp2 polymer materials are identified and optimized. In this context, applications of these materials in optoelectronic devices and energy storage sectors have been explored. In addition, an undergraduate course component was developed on the basis of the comprehensive chemical principles integrated into the synthesis of a highly emissive sp2 organic dye.
