Small organic radicals are generated from precursor molecules seeded into a slit-jet expansion and passed through an electrical discharge. High-resolution (0.0005 cm<sup>-1</sup>) infrared spectra of these radicals provide accurate molecular constants for the ground and vibrational excited states. The combined analysis of three hydroxymethyl vibrational bands (CH-symmetric, CH-asymmetry and OH stretches) has yielded a wealth of information for this radical including tunneling splittings due to internal COH torsional motion. The same instrumental setup has been exploited to rearrange molecular bonds and generate short-lived, intermediate species. Most recently, infrared spectra of o-benzyne and vinyl alcohol have been obtained.
