Electrically conductive MOFs are enabling applications that were not possible for these traditionally insulating materials. Among this relatively new subclass of MOFs, those exhibiting two-dimensional structures, such as Ni<sub>3</sub>(hexaiminotriphenylene)<sub>2</sub> are particularly attractive because their bulk polycrystalline conductivity is on par with that of graphite itself. Unlike the latter, 2D MOFs present a multitude of clear pathways for controlled and rational functionalization, which has allowed their use in electrocatalysis, chemiresistive sensors, and electrical energy storage devices. Oxygen reduction activity matches that of the best non-Pt ORR electrocatalysts, the chemiresistive applications extend from specific analytes such as ammonia to a range of volatile organic compounds, while electrochemical double layer supercapacitors exhibit areal capacitance that exceeds that of all easily sourced carbons. We will summarize progress in this field as well as discuss new avenues and challenges for this exciting new class of 2D materials.
