The design of ligands for specific coordination of f-elements has a wide variety of applications, such as radiotherapy, radionuclide decorporation, and luminescence imaging, among many others. Hence, there is great interest to develop novel chelators with increased binding affinity, selectivity, and more efficient optical properties. We have developed a new series of chelators for f-block elements and begun studying their luminescence and thermodynamic properties with select lanthanides and actinides. The chelate library consists of N-substituted glycine oligomers, otherwise known as peptoids, with catechol and hydroxypyridinone binding units. Thus far they show promising results in their binding affinity and selectivity. Additionally, they offer insights into how the luminescence and binding properties of the peptoid-metal complexes are affected as the ordering of the chelating moieties on the scaffold change.
