Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been recently employed in the activation of many small molecules, such as CO2, ethylene, acetylene, N2O, etc. Although FLPs are capable of binding small molecules, their detection limits for sensor-based applications have not been quantified. This talk will discuss how the introduction of a fluorescent fragment into a FLP can be utilized to display a colorimetric change upon binding a small molecule. This talk will also discuss how the redox nature of the fluorescent fragment can be manipulated to promote the functionalization of coordinated small molecules.
