Adoption of the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards (MATS) in 2015 has required coal-fired power plants to reduce their permissible level of Hg emissions by nearly 90%. The leading technology to meet this regulation is the injection of a powdered activated carbon sorbent into the flue duct to provide a means for capturing and removing the airborne Hg. The development of highly engineered activated carbon sorbents for Hg control in demanding flue gas applications (e.g. high SO3 environments) will be discussed as well as the properties and mechanisms that influence the Hg removal performance.
