Rutile TiO2 pigment was prepared by using unenriched low concentration industrial TiOSO4 solution as raw material via short sulfate process. Heat treatment intensity after phase transition from anatase to rutile has great effects on the crystal structure, crystallite size, particle size distribution, morphology and pigment performances for rutile pigment. The samples were characterized by TG-DSC, XRD, SEM, particle size distribution test and pigment properties test. The crystal size and rutile content for rutile TiO2 has a positive linear correlation with heat treatment intensity, and the grain size growth kinetics meet a first order growth model. While the blue phase index (SCX) has a negative linear correlation with heat treatment intensity. Keeping high temperature at 850 0C for 30 min was the optimized heat treatment condition, and the prepared rutile TiO2 pigment is with suitable grain size, high rutile content, suitable and narrow particle size distribution, and the best optimal pigment performances, with the achromic ability index of 1830.
