Metal-organic frameworks comprise a category of porous materials that have largely been explored through single-metal coordination chemistry. This project, instead, designed and generated polyoxometalate-based materials. Multicoordinate organic ligands can link polyoxometalate (POM) anions. POMs contain transition metals in their highest oxidation state, making them attractive as oxidizing agents. Vanadate POMs have been shown to exhibit unique self-assembly upon reaction with TRIS-type triols (RC(CH2OH)3 where R = a range of derivatives). The organic ligand prepared in this study contains three triol groups extending from a 1,3,5-substituted benzene. The organic building block was characterized via 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and FT-IR. Coordination of organic triols to the POM was accomplished through reaction with [H3V10O28]3–, and the resulting organic-capped [V6O13]2– moieties were characterized by 1H, 13C, and 51V NMR spectroscopy. The hybrid organic-POM-based framework material was characterized with 51V NMR (CP-MAS) spectroscopy and scanning-TEM. Future testing will be performed to observe the redox catalyst capabilities of the material, as well as investigate the potential for counterion exchange.
