Two novel gold (I) complexes containing tris(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethylphenyl)phosphine (MDMPP), and bis(2-methoxyphenyl) chloro-phosphine (MPP) were synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal x-ray diffractometer as well as other spectroscopic methods. The structural features of the complexes synthesized in a 1:1 metal to ligand ratio provide highly luminescent [(MDMPP)3AuCl] and [(MPP)3AuCl] systems with interesting structural features. In addition, higher coordinate Au(I) complexes with tertiary phosphine ligands have also been structurally characterized for the first time. The complexes [(MDMPP)3AuCl] and [(MPP)3AuCl] were tested on triple negative breast cancer cells and a preliminary result indicates that the complex with more lipophilic phosphine appears the most potent on its activity. The details of the differences in biological activity and the cytotoxicity of the complexes against the cancer cells will be discussed. The presentation will also include a prelimnary antimicrobial effect examined using disk diffusion testing on gram negative bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii and Cronbacter muytjensii.
