One of the most cited semiconductor prototypes of conjugated polymers – unsubstituted and structurally well-defined poly-(<i>para</i>-phenylene) (PPP) – was a blank spot on the map of polymer synthesis. Investigation of the imperfect material and of its derivatives created high expectations for the unknown properties of structurally perfect and unsubstituted PPP. Besides the high mechanical strength, excellent chemical resistance, insolubility in common organic solvents and high thermal and oxidative stability of ill-defined PPP, its electrical conductivity in the doped state and electroluminescence makes this material a promising candidate for applications in high-performance organic electronics. The rigid-rod-like nature of PPP is responsible for its insolubility, intractability and very bad processability and thus for the barrage of its synthetic access. Herein we report the first facile synthesis of unsubstituted, structurally well-defined PPP by developing a well-soluble and thus processable precursor-polymer which is easily convertible to the parent PPP.
