Ligand replacement reactions have been performed on a series of 1D and 2D coordination polymers. Many low dimension coordination polymers have accessible water or anion ligands attached to the metal nodes. Small, monodentate ligands, such as ammonia, pyridine or thiocyanate, can replace these ligands by gaseous diffusion through the crystalline coordination polymers or while the coordination polymer is dispersed in a solvent. 1D and 2D coordination polymers based on Co(II), Ni(II), or Cu(II) linked by the linear bidentate ligands 4,4’-bipyridine and pyrazine and with different anions have been investigated. Powder X-ray diffraction reveals that the crystalline coordination polymers remain crystalline after reaction and the presence of the new ligands has been verified by FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis. The coordination environment of the metal has also been probed by diffuse reflectance visible spectroscopy.
