Recently, mesoionic <i>N</i>-heterocyclic carbenes have attracted large attention as ligands in metal complexes. This still young class of compounds impresses with even higher donor strength than their classic counterparts. This discovery led to a surge of application in transition metal-based catalysts - boosting their performance noticeably - while their impact on other fields of research went relatively unheeded. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel series of phosphorescent platinum(II) complexes bearing C^C*-cyclometalated mesoionic NHC ligands. All compounds proved to be strongly emissive at room temperature in poly(methyl methacrylate) films. The photoluminescence properties were strongly dependent on the modifications on the NHC ligand, as well as the used β-diketonate counter ligand.
