A series of three metal-organic frameworks have been studied for their ability to encapsulate dye molecules. MOF-5, Zn-HKUST-1, and ZIF-8 have been synthesized in the presence of a range of concentrations of dye molecules. Powder X-ray diffraction confirms that the dye-encapsulated MOFs exhibit no change in crystal structure with an increasing amount of dye present in the synthesis solution. The amount of dye trapped in the structures has been investigated by UV-Vis and DR-Visible spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and FT-IR. These analyses show the correlation between the amount of dye trapped and the amount in the synthesis mixture.
