Due to enhancements in head and torso protection, fatal injuries on the battlefield have decreased significantly. However, the change in the type of warfare has resulted in significant numbers of severe injuries to the extremities, namely the increased usage of improvised explosive devices. The standard of care in the field leaves much to be desired in terms of antimicrobial behavior, exudate absorption, and tissue preservation. As such, a novel set of porous polymeric materials have been developed that rapidly deliver drugs, absorb significant amounts of fluid, and disperse mineral hemostatic agents to maximize blood clotting efficiency.
