A stereospecific nickel-catalyzed Kumada-type cross coupling reaction of tetrahydropyrans and tetrahydrofurans is detailed.  This method can provide complex substituted acyclic products containing a variety of aryl, alkyl, and isotopically-labeled nucleophiles, which allows for the synthesis of biologically relevant molecules and isotopologues.  A multi-gram scale cross-coupling reaction utilizing a bench-stable catalyst can be applied to a diversity oriented synthetic plan.  A mechanistic investigation into the structure and reactivity of the active catalyst will also be presented.
