The Division of Inorganic Chemistry (DIC) started the Solid State subdivision in 1975 with Aaron Wold (Brown University) as the first Chair. Since that time, solid state and materials chemistry has been embraced by the division with symposium and general session during most ACS National meetings. Solid state chemistry has expanded into materials chemistry and is a healthy area within the inorganic division. I will present some of our motivation and past work on Zintl phases as novel magnetic and electronic materials along with some current results on thermoelectric phases.<br/>
