Many semiconducting polymers have both crystalline and liquid crystalline (LC) phases, and the stability of the LC phase relative to the crystalline phase greatly influences the effects of thermal post-processing. In this presentation, we will show the effect that chain length and the presence of non-crystallizable sequences in the polymer backbone (regiodefects or comonomers) have on the crystalline phase and by association on the stability of the LC phase. As a specific example, we present the results of experimental and model predictions for the semiconducting polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and resolve some outstanding controversies about this widely-studied material. <br/>
