During transformations of organic contaminants that are photosensitized by dissolved organic matter (DOM), a variety of reactive intermediates derived from the parent contaminant can be formed, which are generally assumed to undergo further irreversible reactions to form transformation products. The fate of these intermediates is still largely unknown. Own research performed during the last decade has shown that in the case of the DOM triplet-induced oxidation of aromatic amines, DOM can act as an inhibitor, most probably through interaction of its antioxidant moieties with oxidation intermediates of these aromatic amines, leading to the reformation of the parent compounds. In this contribution we present an overview of this recent research topic, including the latest developments. These are aimed in particular at connecting the fast reaction kinetics of the aforementioned reaction intermediates with the extent of inhibition observed under steady-state illumination.
