An investigation on the performance of a downer reactor in the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process is necessary and important for its commercial application. A hot model circulating downer reactor is built to study the cracking behavior of heavy oil with commercial FCC catalyst. The influence of reaction temperature and catalyst to oil ratio on product's distribution is examined. In addition, the FCC process in the riser and downer reactor is compared. The results show that due to different flow patterns and different mixing performances, there exists apparent disparity of the concentration distribution between riser and downer reactors. Compared to the riser reactor, the gas-solid flow in downer is more close to the plug-flow, the gas and solid velocities and concentrations are more uniform and the axial backmixing is obviously smaller, thus dry gas and coke yield can be inhibited.
