Directed activation of otherwise inert C-H bonds by transition metal complexes has emerged as a powerful tool to directly introduce functionalities in organic compounds. These processes depend on the use of a directing group that coordinates to the metal center. A great challenge has been the use of weakly coordinating directing group. For using these, the development of processes that allow the activation of the C-H bond under mild reaction conditions becomes imperative. Here we present a simple method that allows the halogenation of aromatic C-H bonds mediated by an iridium complex under very mild conditions. The scope of the reaction as well as mechanistic aspects will be presented.
