Over the past 15 years substantial gains have been made in the development of nanoparticle-enabled sensing strategies. These strategies enable analyte detection at vanishingly small concentrations with single molecule detection often reported. In this contribution we will discuss the current state of the sensing field with a particular focus on the application of noble metal surface plasmon surface enabled spectroscopy and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for environmental contaminant sensing. We will illustrate the broad applicability of these approaches for the detection of pathogens, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), herbicides, and other environmental contaminants.
