The outbreak of fungi in drinking groundwater sources can produce odor, cause toxicity and form lots of visible flocs. The inactivation efficiency of four dominant fungal spores Trichoderma, Acremonium, Penicillium, Cladosporiuma by UV and UV based AOPs was conducted. The results showed that the inactivation of fungal spores is consistent with first-order kinetics. The resistance to UV is in order: Cladosporium&gt;Penicillium&gt;Acremonium&gt;Trichoderma, which is far outweighing E.coli. UV/PMS can significantly improve the inactivation rate constant compared to that of UV alone, UV/PS and UV/H2O2. Furthermore, UV/PMS exhibits almost the same inactivation efficiency in an actual groundwater, whereas UV inactivation efficiency decreased remarkably. The inactivation mechanism was explored by monitoring the leakage of intracellular substances (adenosine triphosphate, deoxyribonucleic acid and protein) and the change of spores’ morphology. The results show that UV/PMS resulted in the damage of the cell surface, the remarkable leakage of intracellular compounds and the fungal spores wrinkled.
