Merck has invested much in High Performance Computing (HPC) over the years and still maintains thousands of CPUs dedicated to scientific research … and still runs out of computer power at critical times.  A few years ago cloud-based computing was offered up to cater to such peak demands: this talk will focus on the progress made in allowing scientists to choose to place their work in the cloud.  We will illustrate the progress with examples of science enabled in the cloud, and highlight the remaining steps we need to take to achieve our goal of enabling scientists to choose when they want their result returned, rather than choosing on what platform to run the calculation.
