Phosphorescence origin of the sulfonyl group has been studied and emissive 3LC and 3MLCT were found to be directly related to emission quantum yield as well as emission color. A series of Iridium complexes bear a main ligand of phenylpyridine in which a sulfonyl group is substituted at the 3-positon of the phenyl unit of the phenylpyridine. To correlate 3LC and 3MLCT contributions at the phenylpyridine and the iridium metal center, respectively, related heteroleptic series was proposed whose cyclometallated derivatives possess a structure of Ir(C^N)2(ancillary ligand), where main ligand was either C^N = 3-(pyridin-2-yl)benzene-1-sulfonyl fluoride (SO2F) or 2-(3-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)phenyl)pyridine (SO2CF3) and ancillary ligand were acetylacetone (acac), borate (bor) and picolinate (pic). Within the context to delineate the sulfonyl group effect, emission properties of the ancillary ligands have been scrutinized by means of emission photo-kinetics: a blue-shift emission is observed on going from acac (λmax = 490 nm) to bor (λmax = 460 nm). Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations estimated the emissive triplet states that were cross-examined by photodynamic data. Elaboration of the sulfonyl group effect will be fully disclosed by the photodynamic studies and its significant role will be discussed; its application toward OLEDs will be presented as well.
