Iridium complexes have been known as highly efficient phosphorescent materials. Recently, their application to water reduction has redirected their passage toward artificial photosynthesis as potential photosensitizers. Compared to the well-known Ru counterparts, there seem to be relatively limited number of Iridium photosensitizers known to date. We have developed a series of mono-metallic and bimetallic complexes within this context and detailed photo-chemical and -physical natures have been unveiled accordingly. To gain further insight on energy or electron transfer process involved in the iridium metal center, dendritic molecular architecture was proposed and studied by means of ultra-fast transient spectroscopy. Unique photophysical properties underlying the iridium metal center will be presented.
