Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are of particular interest for the use as nanoporous molecular sieves, catalytic membrane reactors and chemical sensors. Recently, a number of MOF membranes have been fabricated by growing MOF crystals on porous substrates or incorporating MOFs into polymer matrix. In this work, hierarchically structured free-standing MOF membranes constructed by intergrown MOF crystals were prepared by an interfacial synthesis strategy. Free-standing MOF membranes were further <i>in-situ</i> synthesized in the holes of a precisely etched stainless steel mesh to improve mechanical strength, manufacture and application feasibilities . The obtained free-standing MOF membranes have higher porosity and more accessible active sites compared to above-mentioned two types of MOF membranes, and can be as a promising platform for catalytic membrane reactors.
