Sterically encumbering monoisocyanides enable the stabilization of electron rich, low-coordinate transition metal complexes. We have recently extended this concept towards the design of coordination polymers that feature low-valent metal centers via the use of the diisocyanide ligand [CNArMes2]2. Under high dilution reaction conditions these materials are available as amorphous polymers with infrared bands indicative of the incorporation of low-valent transition metals. However, under certain conditions these materials can form porous crystalline frameworks, which not only increases the stability of the resultant low-valent metal center towards aerobic conditions but facilitates the systematic study of their physical properties. These results highlight the ability to generate new framework materials using approaches commonly found in solution-phase organometallic chemistry.
