Metal-salen complexes, which can take three configurations (trans-, cis-β, and cis-α), are one of the most versatile asymmetric catalysts as depicted in Scheme 1. In the past decades, a wide variety of trans-metal-salen complexes have been developed and used as catalysts for various asymmetric organic transformations.1 On the other hand, non-planar cis-β metal-salen complexes were recently found to show unique asymmetric catalysis that cannot be attained by trans-metal-salen complexes. For cis-β ruthenium-salen complexes, the additional two ligands have two different coordination modes, one trans to the phenoxide moiety and the other trans to the imine moiety of the salen ligand. As the synthesis and catalytic properties of cis-β-ruthenium-salen complexes are sparse,2 the research on developing and synthesizing novel cis-β metal-salen complexes as well as their applications towards catalytic organic transformations will be examined.
