The difluoromethylene (CF2) group is an important functionality in the life sciences and materials research. Some problems with traditional reagents for difluoromethylene transfer include short half lives at low temperatures, low reactivities, and limited substrate scopes. Here we describe our efforts to construct stable yet reactive reagents for the installation of the difluoromethyl (CF2H) moiety as well as polydifluoromethylene (CF2)n units. Efforts have been made to transfer these groups to the large pool of aryl halide substrates, while using base metals in order to make the methods as universal as possible. Stoiciometric reactions with well-defined metal complexes provide insight into the mechanistic features of many of the reactions.
