Halogen bond (XB), which specifically refers to the non-covalent interaction between covalently-bonded halogen atoms and electronic negative sites, remains less known until this century with progress made in solution studies and crystallographic surveys. Halogen bonding interaction has also been employed in the catalytic reaction in the past decades, such as Diels-Alder reaction, nucleophilic substitution, and transfer hydrogenation. Recently, 2-iodoimidazolium-based halogen bonding donors were synthesized and employed in the Friedel-Craft-type alkylation reaction of substituted thiophenes with various α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. With a catalytic amount of halogen bonding catalysts, moderate to excellent yields were achieved. Spectrometry studies were also carried on to disclose the reaction mechanism.
