Metallacrowns (MC) are a versatile class of molecules analogous to the organic crown ethers except instead of a C-C-O- repeat unit of the crown ether, a MC  has a M-N-O- repeat unit were M is a metal ion and N is nitrogen.  Metals are not typically stable with only two bonds, so a ligand framework needs to be built around the metal ion.  A common choice is salicylhydroxamic acid, which is used for the MCs in this investigation. Metallacrowns can range from 9-MC-3 to 60-MC-20, and these compounds can have different properties such as single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior and luminescence.  These properties can be manipulated based on the central metal ion and ring metal ions used. Recently lanthanide metal ions have been incorporated into the central cavity of 12-MC-4 structure that have manganese(III) ring ions.  These MCs have shown interesting magnetic properties; however, it is difficult to investigate the magnetic properties of the lanthanide ions in the presence of the paramagnetic Mn(III) ions.  To isolate the magnetic behavior of the lanthanide ion, we have replaced the Mn(III) ions with diamagnetic aluminum ions.  Herein we report the X-ray structure an aluminum-lanthanide metallacryptand compound with the lanthanide ion residing in the middle of the MC cavity.<br/>
