Chemical-looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) is an oxygen transport process using a solid oxygen-carrier (OC) that releases gaseous O2 for fuel conversion. The generation of CO2 enriched flue gas, that greatly benefits CO2 capture, is the primary advantage of this process. CLOU has successfully been demonstrated using synthetic Cu-based oxygen carriers (mainly CuO) in a 1.5 KW continuously-operating CLOU reactor using bituminous coal and pine wood. Compared to the synthetic OC, natural minerals or industrial waste products are attractive for solid fuel CLOU because of their potentially lower cost. The solid fuels are heterogeneous material and consists of mineral matter (ash). The ash may reduce the OC reactivity by blocking the pores and available surface area. The objectives of this study are to investigate the reactivity and recyclability of natural CuO ore on solid fuels with different ash contents. Chars from Powder River Basin (PRB) sub-bituminous coal and yellow pine wood were selected for this study. The chars were prepared by pyrolyzing the starting materials at 1000oC under nitrogen. TGA-MS was used to test for reactivity and recyclability at 900°C in Ar and air. The copper compounds in the test residues were analyzed using XRD. The surface areas of the OC were analyzed to study the influence of ash on the OC. The natural ore has potential as a competitive oxygen carrier in the solid fuel CLOU based on its reactivity in this study.
