Flavonoids in general are highly biologically active and thus have attracted a significant amount of synthetic and biological attention. In contrast, the aurones, a small and rather unusual sub-family of the flavonoids, have only more recently begun to attract much attention. Efforts in the Handy group were initially focused on the development of mild, efficient, and general methods for the synthesis of this family of compounds. More recently, though, a number of interesting potential applications have begun to emerge. This talk will briefly summarize the synthetic efforts for the synthesis and functionalization of the aurone skeleton, as well as some unusual limitations, and then discuss a few of the interesting observations in areas such as anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-trypanozomal activities.
