The mechanism for the Cope-type hydroamination between alkynes and hydroxylamine was studied by a combination of <sup>13</sup>C intermolecular kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) and theoretical calculations. The isotope effects observed experimentally agreed with the predicted KIEs by conventional transition state theory. These results show how KIEs are a great method to obtain insight about the structure of the transition states for a determined reaction. However, one set of experimental data is not enough to confirm this conclusion. Other experimental and theoretical studies are still in progress in order to fully understand the selectivity and isotope effects for this reaction.
