NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is a class of drugs that provides antipyretic (fever reducing), analgesic (pain-killing), and anti-inflammatory effects. They are among the pharmaceuticals that are continually being released into the environment. Because of their physical and chemical properties, many of them or their bioactive metabolites can accumulate in sediments, sludge, and soils, and induce adverse effects in terrestrial organisms. However, due to the very limited methods permitting the detection of these low-level concentration compounds in such complex matrices, their concentrations in environmental samples remain largely unknown. In this study, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and naproxen have been used as target analytes in the development of sampling pretreatment method using commercially available molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The NSAIDs in environmental water samples were extracted using MIP and then analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results show that the use of MIP improves the analysis as higher amounts of NSAIDs were found in comparison to the method presently used in environmental analysis.
