Chemistry Education researchers have shown that many students hold misconceptions across different areas of chemistry. One way the CER community has been addressing misconceptions is through the development of concept inventories. Concept inventories are assessment tools used to measure students' conceptual knowledge and misconceptions about a given concept. Research studies have shown misconceptions are held by both novice and advanced chemistry students and can become deeply engrained as students build new knowledge on top non-scientifically correct conceptual ideas. Concept inventories can be developed either based primarily on misconceptions reported in literature or through uncovering additional misconceptions with student interviews or surveys. The research behind the development and validation of concept inventories will be presented. The Bonding Representations Inventory (BRI) will be used as one example of how we can utilize previously published CER studies and incorporate the research into the classroom in order to detect and address student misconceptions.
