Abstract: As one of the important compulsory courses for non-chemistry and chemical engineering specialty undergraduates in universities, General Chemistry can establish the linkage between various engineering specialties and chemistry; and moreover, the cognitive methods to substances and the interpretation methods to the changing rules of the substances by Chemistry subject, are the main components of the undergraduates’ scientific qualities and comprehensive abilities.  On the basis of the learning backgrounds for the students in their junior and senior high schools, and on the basis of the developed teaching methods at present in universities, some practices are adopted in Harbin Institute of Technology, to focus on the optimize of teaching contents and on the develop of teaching methods to the compulsory course of General Chemistry. The practices are the enriching the application examples by joining the teaching contents with the specialties of undergraduates to exhibit the interesting and the usage of the course; are the increasing of the experiments items from the research results of the teachers and the researchers of the chemistry specialty in our university to enlarge the teaching contents in the classes; are the introduction of the social hot points and the industrial conditions by the chemical viewpoints to help to interpret the fundamentals and the changing rules of substances and to help to guarantee the teaching effects.
