Increased used of nanoparticles in advanced technologies poses the risk that nanoparticles will eventually make their way into the environment. Whether these nanoparticles are engineered or natural, the fate, persistence, and toxicity of nanoparticles in environmental scenarios is not well understood. More specifically, aquatic environments are a likely endpoint for some nanoparticles. This work explores an aquatic species, L. sylvaticus tadpoles (commonly known as wood frogs), as a model organism for examining the impacts that cetyltrimethylammonium bromide capped gold nanoparticles. Previous data has identified that upon extended exposure to CTAB capped gold nanoparticles, the anterior portion of L. sylvaticus is enriched with nanoparticles relative to the posterior region, suggesting the nanoparticles may be taken in through the digestive or respiratory system. The aim of this study was to quantify the uptake and depuration of CTAB capped gold nanoparticles in wood frog tadpoles. Wood frog tadpoles were exposed to CTAB capped gold nanoparticles for 21 days and then placed into nanoparticle free dechlorinated water to measure if the nanoparticles were retained in the organisms.
