Writing provides an opportunity for students to synthesize ideas and demonstrate their understanding. Adapting the "Fuel Choice Scenario" originally described by Sevian and Talanquer, I ask my students to choose one of four possible fuel types to power a go-cart ride at an amusement park. They must defend their choice using correct chemical knowledge, and consider multiple factors including cost, environmental impact, and safety. Examining the bridge between research and practice, I will share examples of student work and discuss the impact on student learning.
