Using matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy, 1,1-diiodoethane and iodoethyl radical were spectroscopically investigated. The iodoethyl radical was synthesized from pyrolysis of the precursor, 1,1-diiodoethane according to the follwoing reaction: CH3CHI2 → CH3CHI + I. The precursor was flowed through a SiC tube and thermally decomposed using a hyperthermal nozzle. Because of its reactivity, the iodoethyl radical was deposited on a cold CsI plate and isolated in an Argon matrix cooled by He cryostat at about 10 K. Using a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrometer, infrared absorption spectra for 1,1-diiodoethane and iodoethyl radical have been obtained at various conditions. Infrared absorption peaks for 1,1-diiodoethane and iodoethyl radicals have been observed by analyzing the infrared spectra. Vibrational frequencies for both molecules have been assigned for the fundamental vibrational transitions. 17 out of 18 vibrational frequencies were assigned for 1,1-diiodoethane. 13 out of 15 vibrational frequencies were assigned for iodoethyl radical. These vibrational frequencies are important for fundamental knowledge of the molecules’ spectroscopic characteristics and for identifying these molecules in further atmospheric research.
