During electrospinning an electric field spins nanofibers from a polymer into a desired structure. In addition to the base polymer, various additives can be included to elicit desirable effects. Electrospinning is used in numerous applications including the fabrication of wound dressings. In this study, wound dressings were made using Techophilic (TP), a superabsorbent polymer (SAP), and other additives to release nitric oxide, a known vasodilator. In addition, another set of wound dressings were made using TP and SAP which contained antibiotics, such as penicillin and streptomycin. The wound dressings were applied to 1.5 cm dermal incisions on rats and the rate of wound healing was compared. During this preliminary study, the dressings with additives increased the rate of wound healing. Through this research, the healing time of wounds could be decreased through bandaging with these dressings which would provide therapeutic benefits for patients.
