In student’s eyes, organic chemistry has always had a stigma against it as the most difficult course anyone can take. While it is true there is a vast amount of material to learn, it can be made approachable and enjoyable for students. One major challenge is students tend to get lost more easily in classrooms filled with hundreds of other students, causing passive learning to be more attractive. This can be remedied through the effective delivery of material, utilization of new technologies, and underscoring of active learning to better convey fundamental concepts to increasingly larger classes. At Binghamton University, we offer students numerous in-class and after-class opportunities to reinforce understanding of class topics. This talk will focus on different technologies and strategies that are meant to break down the negative preconceived notions of an organic chemistry course, as we work smarter, not harder, to teach our students.
