Southeastern Oklahoma State University's American Chemical Society Student Members Chapter is constantly involved with chemistry students and the surrounding community, with the goal of spreading the importance and joy of chemistry. The chapter hosts research speakers and graduate school recruiters to give chemical or industrial presentations at our university, and arranges for students to tour graduate campuses and attend local science meetings. We tried new activities this year, trying to compete in some Homecoming contests; we just wanted to get our organization’s name known on campus, but our candidate actually won the coveted Big Man on Campus by raising the most money for a charity; we held a bake sale and collected donations on and off campus. National Chemistry Week fell during our fall break, so the chapter took advantage of cancelled classes and toured a medical technology lab at a tribal hospital, where they use chemistry to figure out why patients are sick. We also helped our department serve sandwiches drinks at the second-ever departmental Homecoming booth. We also hosted a booth on Halloween, promoting chemistry to families and providing spooky sweets. We support local charitable efforts such as helping with canned food drives, working at 5K runs for charity, and raising funds to donate to specific causes. Other chapter activities include hosting chemistry speakers, acknowledging active members at graduation, chapter fundraisers, doing a chemistry demonstration at a university Parents Day, hosting Webinars and a mole-guessing contest, attending local meeting or going on tours, intramural competitions and social activities.
