<br/>Teaching chemistry in the context of student experiences makes the subject more meaningful as students relate the scientific content to their lives.  One context that is frequently used to teach chemistry is an environmental context:  Students learn chemistry in the context of climate change, air pollution, water quality, and environmental issues unique to their local community.  These contexts provide an opportunity to connect environmental challenges to green chemistry applications, acknowledging past problems while identifying scientific solutions.  This presentation will examine specific examples of environmental issues, such as the recent Flint water crisis, in a social justice context, and explore green chemistry’s role in addressing these issues.<br/>
