NSF MRSEC “Polarization and Spin Phenomena in Nanoferroic Structures” (P-SPINS) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is centered on studies of new ferroic structures and materials at the nanometer scale, aiming at a fundamental understanding of topics of significant technological importance. In addition to achieving the important research goals, the Center also focuses on developing education and outreach programs that align with the multidisciplinary research theme. The overarching goals of P-SPINS’ education and human resources development efforts are to provide cutting-edge interdisciplinary research opportunities to students, postdoctoral researchers, and educators, in addition to broadening the participation of members of underrepresented groups in materials research at all levels. These goals are accomplished through a balanced ladder of research and education opportunities for a diverse population of Center participants. While training undergraduate and graduate students is pivotal to the Center, training of postdoctoral scholars and other research faculty is equally instrumental in augmenting the broader impact of the Center. In this presentation, we review the types of support and training available to postdoctoral scholars and other research faculty to improve their career prospects. Specifically, the Center has programs to assist them in developing research plans, and writing and submitting proposals. They are also given opportunities to mentor young researchers and in some cases, opportunities to teach in classes so as to prepare them for future academic careers.
