Illinois State University’s Chemistry Club was very successful during the 2015-2016 academic year, earning a commendable rating from the American Chemical Society.  ISU’s chemistry club is a Student Affiliate Chapter of the Heartland Section of the American Chemical Society.  The Chemistry Club held a number of outreach events, student chapter meetings, poster sessions, and sold lab manuals twice throughout the academic year.  Lab manuals and goggles were sold with the help of volunteers from the club.  Profit from the lab manual and goggle sales went towards funding conference travel and summer research grants for chemistry and biochemistry majors.  Grants were awarded based on the amount of hours volunteered at the lab manual sale, how many meetings the student attended, and how many hours the student volunteered for outreach activities.  The club held many social meetings for its members, including a Valentine’s day meeting at which refreshments were provided and members were able to flash freeze roses using liquid nitrogen and smash them.  Additionally, Chemistry club rented lanes at ISU’s bowling and billiards center and provided pizza and free bowling for all members in attendance.  The club also had many educational meetings, inviting guest speakers like Dr. Lash and Dr. Hamaker to talk about their research interests.  The club also hosted Battle of the Chemistry Clubs, an event that brings together chemistry clubs from colleges across Illinois to compete for the graduated cylinder of greatness.  Outreach activities included inviting College Mentors for Kids to ISU’s Science Lab Building.  Fourth and Fifth graders attended with their college mentors and took part in hands on science demonstrations that included making slime and doing glue diffusion experiments.  The club also hosted a poster session that allowed members to present their research to their peers and professors.  The chemistry club also supported professional and social development through various events such as resume workshops and presentations on the benefits of being a member of the American Chemical Society.<br/>
