Since the complete genome of a single-stranded bacteriophage was successfully sequenced in 1977, it was envisioned that the sequencing of the complete human genome could lead to individualized prevention, diagnosis, treatments, and drugs in addition to large scale studies of heredity diseases. In order to make this technology universally available and useful the required time and cost of current methods must be reduced. Theoretical and experimental research has recently revealed the use of quantum tunneling in determining individual nucleobases while electrophoretic translocation through nanopores has served as the principal method of constraining the nucleobases. We propose identifying unique electronic signatures of various codons (nucleobase triplets) encapsulated in single-walled carbon nanotubes through calculation at the B3LYP/6-311G** level of theory.   It is hoped that this method will effectively reduce the time, cost, and jamming associated with single base sequencing.
