The interactions and synergistic effects of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and algaecides with cyanobacteria have not been well investigated. In this study, a novel high-throughput and highly sensitive single cell (SC)-ICP-MS method was developed by using a NexION 350D ICP-MS system from PerkinElmer. The newly developed SC-ICP-MS method was applied to study the interaction and toxicity of Cu-containing algaecides and CeO2 ENP to unicellular cyanobacteria. <i>Microcystis aeruginosa </i>was used as model cyanobacteria. Different concentrations of Cu-containing algaecide without and with ENPs were used to treat the cyanobacteria. The cell status, Cu uptake, and ENP fate were quickly analyzed by SC-ICP-MS technique in single cell level. The detailed results will be presented at the conference. The developed emerging methodology in this study paved a new road to investigate the interaction of metal element, ENPs, and unicellular organisms.
