We have developed a new synthesis method of the nanoparticles, cadmium sulfide/zinc sulfide also referred to as quantum dots. Quantum dots are semi-conducting nanoparticles; tiny man-made crystals that cannot be seen by the human eye. In this research cadmium sulfide nanoparticles are synthesized by combining solutions of Cd(NO3)2 and Na2S in the presences of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which acts a capping agent. Zinc sulfide nanoparticles were synthesized in a similar manner by substituting Zn(NO3)2 for Cd(NO3)2. Particle size and band gap calculations of the nanoparticle solutions are analyzed by UV–vis spectrophotometry. We will be determining how the ratio of the starting materials, cadmium sulfide and zinc sulfide, will affect electronic properties.
