Our group’s previous study has demonstrated alkanethiolate-funtionalized Pd nanoparticles (PdNP) prepared by the thiosulfate protocol are effective catalysts in both isomerization and hydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes. Since these stable and isolable PdNP might exhibit high reactivity and chemical selectivity towards a wide range of chemicals after the modification of the ligands surrounding the Pd core, it is potentially significant in expanding the uses of such nanoparticle catalysts. The ability of functionalized ligand-capped nanoparticles in enhancing or resisting the adsorption of particular substrates is being investigated.  Attaching PdNP with aromatic ‘tail’ has shown to change the non-covalent interactions on the nanoparticles’ surface. Further modification of PdNP by introduction of a chiral center will be investigated for the asymmetric hydrogenation.<br/><br/>This project is supported by the Undergraduate Education Program of the W.
